What happens once the tattoo is finished?
Once the tattoo session is done, the artist should explain to you how to care for the tattoo.
There are many ways to take care of it but your artist will suggest the method that s/he finds best. The tattoo should be covered after the session and you will be told to remove it after a certain period of time (depends on when and how it was put on).
Once it is uncovered, it is imperative that a panthenol (which is an ingredient that helps with healing) based cream is applied 3 times a day. Don’t forget to wash your hands before applying the cream. It is also beneficial to wash it at least once daily with the appropriate soap to remove the moisture before applying the cream. This minimises the risk of having bacteria growth due to the possibility of bacteria being present on the cream or tattoo from an outside source. Whilst it is healing, there will be days where you will be having an annoying itch, I found that it helps to put a cold wet cloth on it before applying the cream.
After the tattoo fully heals, it still needs to be taken care of, especially if you go to the beach. High factor sunblock needs to be applied every two hours to protect it from the sun. Every time the tattoo is exposed to the sun for long periods of time, it will lose some of its colour and definition. It is ideal to cover it with some kind of bandage or cloth in order to preserve it. On the other hand, if you go out at night and it will be uncovered, try to rub some moisturiser on it to make the black stand out and make it look fresh.
